Road to Wimbledon is the biggest junior tournament in British tennis and gives all 14U players the opportunity to progress through to compete on the world famous grass courts at Wimbledon. Emma is 11 years old and has secured her place in the 14U event at Wimbledon, the home of tennis.
Emma Fitzgerald won the Road to Wimbledon Event at Kings Tennis Club, which progressed her to the Regional Tournament where she also won, meaning she qualified to play at the National Finals at Wimbledon last weekend (August 2023).
It is such an amazing achievement for an 11 year old and we couldn’t be prouder.
Emma played in the 14U finals of Road to Wimbledon the last few days, she’s 11. She won 1 match and lost 2, but most of all she had an amazing experience and loved every second! Playing on good grass courts is such a privilege, but very well earned and deserved!!
Emma tells us more about her fantastic experience: “I just loved playing on grass! As part of the day I went on a tour of Centre Court and I just couldn’t believe that the court only gets played on for the two weeks of The Championships. I was kindly given lunch money whilst I was there which was great and I couldn’t believe how HUGE the changing rooms are. I had such a brilliant time, the sun shone all day and I loved every second.”
Every year there are 10,000 children aged 11-14 who take part in the competition and just 96 make it to the Finals on the grass courts at Wimbledon. It is a unique experience what it is like to be a pro at The Championships. The competition gives the opportunity to gain big match experience. Incredible that Emma made it to the last 96 in the country.
