Emma Raducanu – US Open Champion
It has been nearly a week since Emma Raducanu won the US Open – this was an unexpected result within the world of tennis. The 18 year old entered the tournament in the qualifying rounds and even had her return flights booked as she didn’t expect to qualify! She then continued through the rounds and didn’t even drop a set playing just exceptional tennis, both physically and mentally.
There has been more media coverage for women’s tennis this past week than probably ever before and as a female tennis player and coach this is just thrilling. Raising the awareness of the sport for everyone, adults, children, men, women, boys and especially girls is just fantastic!
What I love about Emma is that the kids watching her in the UK will see this lovely, smiley girl who without doubt loves playing tennis. With this, she also shows a physically and mentally strong female who is willing to compete for everything relentlessly.
We are not always a nation who encourages children to be highly competitive. People often think that children who are very good at tennis or young successful athletes are pushed into it…this is a clear example of a girl that is loving what she is doing!
I can’t wait to see her excel in the future and I hope she has inspired you to be your best on and off the court.
