Matchplay and Tournaments

Monthly Saturday Matchplay

Matchplay is part of our Junior Coaching Programme, with the main aim to help more children play in more matches in a structured and organised manner.

Every month we will run Saturday Matchplay for U8/U9s, U10s and U11-18s. These matchplay sessions are aimed at players on our program who are or potentially, or will be playing competitions at and outside the club. The last of our sessions will be taking place on Saturday 6 December. Children have to be members and they are invite only sessions.

Age group time slots:

  • 12 – 2pm – U8/U9 Matchplay
  • 2 – 3.30pm – U10 Matchplay
  • 3.30 – 6pm – U11-U18 Matchplay
  • 6 – 7pm – Pizza in the Clubhouse

Local Tournaments

Elly Shearman Tennis Coaches will attend a number of local tournaments to support and guide your children through the tournament experience.

Parents will need to enter their child(ren), but once at the tournament our coaches will guide the children so that parents can sit back and enjoy watching their children play. Again, we will expect our juniors who are able to play matches to be entering two tournaments during a long term, and more if they are aiming for County Level.

Local Tournaments

We believe this new way of attending matchplay sessions and competing in local tournaments engages more children in the tournament structure for tennis. It also helps guide parents and children, whilst giving matchplay opportunities at the club, to develop confidence in the match court and for most age groups therefore having more match play over a term.

Elly Shearman Coaches will attend the following local tournaments to support and guide your children through the tournament experience. Subject to change depending on entries for tournaments.

Junior Coaching FAQs

It will depend on your child’s age and skill, we will inform you when your child is ready to move to the next group.

As a general rule for U10s, if they put the end of the handle in their armpit with the racket running along their arm, they should just be able to touch the end of the racket. By the time children are 11+ they will probably be using a full size 27” racket.

If you are unsure please ask your coach when you next see them and they will be able to advise.

Yes, we are able to support people completing their Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE), please get in touch with Elly directly.

We are an inclusive club and we want to encourage as many people to play tennis as possible. We have a number of squads for teens but we also offer drop in sessions for teens who just want to play for fun and not commit to a weekly more competitive session. Yes, we would love to do more curriculum tennis, if your school is interested please feel free to give them our details. However, many schools have multi-sport programs working out of their school or running in their PE lessons and this can sometimes hinder whether they want tennis experts coming in as well.
