Our New Coach John Brunskill
John joined our team of fantastic coaches in August. He will be taking a range of junior sessions across the week.
John is a Level 3 coach and has a wealth of experience coaching both junior and adult players.
John started playing tennis at the age of eight at his local tennis centre in Islington, London. He started to take the game more seriously at around age 12 where he joined the squads at his local tennis centre and entered tournaments.
He continued to compete as a child through to an adult and he managed to reach the top 350 players in the UK (ranked 342). He has also played first team tennis for the university of Bristol and his goal is to one day play an ITF futures.
John explains his coaching experience: “I gained my level one coaching badge when I was 16 and continued to progress from there. When I was 19 I coached at the Cumberland Lawn Tennis Club in London. This is where Bjorn Borg and Ile Nastase used to warm up for Wimbledon (on the grass courts). As a result I have actually met Bjorn Borg.
“What I love about coaching is seeing the smiles on people faces when they make an improvement in their game. As a lover of tennis myself, I know how something so small can feel so important.”
Four fun facts about John:
- When he was younger, John trained with Andrea Gaudenzi’s children (Andrea Gaudenzi is head of the LTA)
- He is a modern language student at the University of Bristol (French and German)
- He is an ex coach of a two time special Olympic champion (Lily Mills)
- He once sat next to Paul McCartney watching the Gruffalo On Stage
